Packing List: What to Actually Bring on a Kenya Camping Safari

The single most important item on this list isn’t a thing you pack, it’s the bag you pack it in. Bring a soft duffel, not a hard-shell suitcase. Light-aircraft transfers between camps run strict weight and shape limits, and a rigid case simply doesn’t fit in the hold of a 12-seat Caravan the way a duffel folds in. 15kg total including hand luggage is the usual ceiling on internal flights, so pack lean from the start rather than editing down at the airstrip.

Clothing should run neutral, khaki, olive, tan, stone, because bright colors and pure white or black both stand out to wildlife and show dust immediately. Layers matter more than any single piece: it’s genuinely cold on a 5:30am game drive and warm by 10am, so a fleece or light jacket over a t-shirt beats one heavy layer. A wide-brim hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen aren’t optional at this altitude and latitude even on overcast days. Closed shoes for camp walks, sandals for evenings, and one long-sleeve layer for dusk when the mosquitoes come out.

Beyond clothing: your own binoculars if you have decent ones, a headlamp for the walk back to your tent after dinner, a dry bag or ziplock for camera gear on dusty roads, and a portable charger, since not every mobile camp runs power to the tents around the clock. Malaria prophylaxis and a basic personal med kit are worth confirming with your doctor before you fly, not once you’re in camp. Everything else, towels, bedding, camp chairs, is already there waiting for you.
