July through September is the migration window in the Mara, when the wildebeest push north out of the Serengeti and the river crossings happen. It’s also the busiest and priciest stretch, and mobile camp capacity inside the reserve is limited by design, so this is the one window where booking 4-5 months ahead genuinely matters. January through March runs drier and quieter, with thinner vegetation that makes game viewing easier everywhere from Amboseli to Samburu, and noticeably fewer vehicles at the same sighting. The long rains hit April-May, which is the real low season: some camps close briefly, tracks get harder going, but the light after rain is extraordinary and rates drop accordingly. June and the short rains in November sit in between, green, quiet, and underrated.
If your trip is built around one specific thing, a river crossing, Amboseli’s elephants against Kilimanjaro on a clear morning, the driest possible tracking conditions, let that dictate the month. If you just want a good camping safari without fighting other vehicles for a sighting, January-March or the June-November shoulder months are the better-kept secret.
