I woke up on our last morning at a fly-camp near Chyulu Hills to the sound of the crew quietly folding canvas chairs and packing the breakfast table into a Land Cruiser. It was 5:40am, still dark, and cold enough that I pulled my fleece tighter before the coffee arrived. Three days later I was on a lounger at Diani Beach with sand between my toes and a completely different kind of quiet around me. That contrast is exactly why a diani beach safari extension itinerary works so well for honeymooners, and why it’s worth planning properly instead of bolting a few beach days onto the end of a safari as an afterthought.
Why Combine a Safari With Diani Beach
A safari gives you adrenaline, early starts, and long days in a vehicle scanning the bush. Diani gives you the opposite: warm Indian Ocean water, white sand, and nothing scheduled. For a honeymoon, that pairing matters. You get the shared awe of watching elephants at a waterhole, then you get days with no plan at all except each other.
Most operators sell this as a generic “bush and beach” package. Few actually spell out how the transfer works, what it costs, or which camp and beach stay make sense together. That’s the gap this itinerary fills.
The 7-Day Diani Beach Safari Extension Itinerary
This is the itinerary we build most often for couples who want both romance and real wilderness, not a compromise between them.
Day 1: Fly from Nairobi Wilson Airport to an airstrip near Amboseli or Chyulu Hills. Transfer to a mobile tented fly-camp, the kind with canvas walls, a camp bed, and a paraffin lamp instead of a light switch. Afternoon game drive, sundowners on the crater rim.
Day 2: Full day out, tracking elephants against the backdrop of Kilimanjaro if the cloud cover lifts. Many camps in this area, including permanent lodges like ol Donyo Lodge, offer star-bed nights: your bed rolled onto an open deck so you fall asleep under the actual sky. Worth requesting specifically when you book.
Day 3: Slow morning game drive, camp breakfast packed up around you. Early afternoon transfer begins toward the coast.
Day 4: Arrive in Diani. Depending on your route, this is either an 8 to 9 hour drive through Voi and Mombasa, or a roughly 2 hour hop involving a short flight back through Nairobi Wilson. That matches the real transfer times from Amboseli and Chyulu Hills. Fly-camps in this area sit far enough from the coast road that the shorter routes used from Tsavo do not apply here. Check into your beach property, no plans for the rest of the day.
Day 5: Full beach day. Optional snorkeling or dhow trip out to Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours by road south to Shimoni, followed by a boat crossing.
Day 6: Morning visit to Colobus Conservation to see the black-and-white colobus monkeys the coast is known for, then a sunset dhow sail from the beach in front of your hotel.
Day 7: Departure via Ukunda airstrip or Mombasa’s Moi International Airport.
If your honeymoon has more flexibility, our full safari and beach honeymoon guide covers 9 to 11 day versions that add a second safari park before the coast leg.
Shorter and Longer Options
Not every couple has 7 days. Here’s how the timing generally breaks down:
- 2 to 3 days: Only realistic as a short coastal add-on after a safari that’s already ending near Mombasa or Tsavo. Skip long transfers.
- 4 to 5 days: One safari park (usually Tsavo East or Amboseli) plus 3 solid beach days at Diani.
- 7 days: The itinerary above. One fly-camp or lodge stay, full transfer, 3 to 4 beach days.
- 9 to 11 days: Two safari destinations, often Masai Mara then Amboseli or Tsavo, followed by 4 to 5 days at Diani.

Getting to Diani: Flying vs. Driving
This is the decision most itineraries gloss over, and it changes your budget and your schedule more than anything else on the trip.
| Route | Distance | Drive Time | Flight Time | Approx. Cost (per person, one-way) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Masai Mara to Diani | ~580 km road equivalent | Not recommended to drive; 10+ hrs | ~2.5 hrs via Nairobi Wilson connection | USD 350-450 (indicative) |
| Amboseli/Chyulu Hills to Diani | ~450 km | 8-9 hrs via Voi and Mombasa | ~2 hrs via Wilson | USD 300-400 (indicative) |
| Tsavo East/West to Diani | 220-270 km | 4-5 hrs via Voi, Mombasa, and the Dongo Kundu Bypass | ~1.5-2 hrs via Wilson | USD 150-250 driving, USD 250-350 flying (indicative) |
| Nairobi (Wilson) to Ukunda airstrip | ~440 km air distance | Not practical to drive same day | ~1 hr direct | USD 150-220 (indicative) |
The Dongo Kundu Bypass, the new road connecting Mombasa’s mainland south side to the Diani area, means you can now skip the Likoni ferry queue entirely if you’re driving in from Tsavo. That alone can save an hour or more compared to older itineraries built around the ferry crossing. Note that this shortcut applies to the Tsavo route. Trips from Amboseli or Chyulu Hills still cover more ground and take longer overall.
If you’re coming from the Masai Mara, flying is almost always the right call. Driving means backtracking through Nairobi anyway, and the road distance eats a full day you’d rather spend on the beach. Our guide on where to go after the Masai Mara breaks down connection options in more detail if your safari starts there.
Where to Stay in Diani
For a honeymoon, privacy matters as much as the view. A few real options across budget tiers:
- Alfajiri Villas: Private beachfront villas, adults-focused, personal chef included. Sits at the top end of the market.
- The Sands at Nomad: Beachfront resort with a quieter, couples-oriented feel and direct beach access.
- Diani Sea Lodge: Solid mid-range option, garden-to-beach setting, good value for a 3 to 4 night stay.
- Stilts Eco Lodge: Budget-friendly, treehouse-style rooms set back from the beach in coastal forest.
If you want a curated shortlist built specifically around privacy and romance rather than general tourist ratings, see our page on the best adults-only honeymoon safari camps, which also covers Diani-area properties in the same tier.
Best Time of Year for This Combination
June through October gives you dry safari conditions and calm coastal seas, good for snorkeling visibility at Kisite-Mpunguti. December through March is hot and mostly dry on both ends, also a strong window. Note that Masai Mara park fees jump to USD 200 per adult per day from July through December during peak migration season, versus USD 100 from January through June, so factor that into your budget if the Mara is part of your route. Amboseli and Tsavo hold steady at USD 90 and USD 80 per adult per day respectively, regardless of season.
April and May bring the long rains, which can ground light aircraft and turn some safari roads to mud, so we generally steer honeymoon itineraries away from that window unless the couple is flexible about delays.

What to Do at Diani Beach
Beyond the obvious lounging, Diani gives you real options for one or two active days:
- Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park: Snorkeling and dolphin-watching by boat from Shimoni, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours south of Diani by road, depending on conditions.
- Colobus Conservation: A small rescue and research center focused on the threatened Angolan colobus monkey, worth an hour or two.
- Dhow sailing: Sunset sails leave directly from the beach in front of most hotels, no transfer needed.
- Diani Beach itself: 17 km of white sand, calm and reef-protected for swimming most of the year.
The BestCamp Safaris Difference
We don’t sell a generic bush-and-beach package with vague duration tiers. We build the transfer first, checking real flight schedules and road conditions between your safari camp and the coast, then fit the safari and beach nights around that. For honeymoon couples specifically, we prioritize camps that offer star-bed nights and private dining, and beach properties that skip the resort-crowd feel in favor of something quieter. Every itinerary we send includes actual drive times and actual per-person costs, cross-checked against the route you’re actually taking, not ranges pulled from a brochure.
