If you have one week off work and want both the Masai Mara’s grasslands and Amboseli’s elephants under Kilimanjaro, a 5 day Mara Amboseli itinerary can work. It just needs a plan that respects the distance between them. This is the itinerary we actually run, with real transfer times and real prices, not a rough sketch.

Is 5 Days Enough for Masai Mara and Amboseli?

Yes, but only if you accept a trade-off. The two parks sit about 450 km apart by road, on opposite sides of Nairobi. Cramming both into five days means one long travel day, or a short flight that costs more but saves you six hours in a vehicle.

We tell first-time guests to think of it as two mini safaris joined by a transfer, not one long, seamless loop. Set that expectation early and the trip feels generous, not rushed.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi to Masai Mara. An early flight from Wilson Airport gets you to a Mara airstrip by mid-morning. You’ll have time for a game drive on the way to camp, arriving before the afternoon heat sets in. First night in camp usually means dinner by lamplight and the sound of hyenas somewhere past the fence line.

Day 2: Full day in the Mara. Two game drives, one at dawn and one in late afternoon, with a rest at camp through the heat of midday. This is your best shot at lion, cheetah on the open plains, and, if it’s July through September, the Great Migration crossing the Mara River.

Day 3: Mara to Amboseli. This is the transfer day. Whether you fly or drive (details below), plan for most of the day in transit. If you fly, you can still catch a short evening drive in Amboseli.

Day 4: Full day in Amboseli. Morning and afternoon drives across the swamps and dry lake bed, with Kilimanjaro as a backdrop on a clear morning. Amboseli is smaller than the Mara, so the game viewing feels more concentrated, especially around Enkongo Narok swamp.

Day 5: Amboseli to Nairobi. A final early drive, then a short flight or a roughly four-hour road transfer back to Nairobi for your onward journey.

Masai Mara First or Amboseli First?

We almost always route the Mara first. Here’s why. The Mara has the bigger wow factor for a first game drive, open plains, big cats, and often the migration. Starting there sets the tone. Amboseli, with its calmer pace and elephant herds against Kilimanjaro, works well as a gentler close to the trip.

Flying into the Mara first from Nairobi is also usually the shorter, cheaper leg, which leaves more budget for the fly-out option on the harder Mara-to-Amboseli hop.

Getting Between the Parks: Fly or Drive

This is the part most itinerary pages skip. Here’s what each option actually costs in time and money.

The road route runs from the Mara down to Narok, across to Nairobi, then south through Namanga toward Amboseli’s Kimana or Amboseli gate. It’s scenic but long, and it eats most of Day 3.

Flying costs more, but you land on a real airstrip inside or near Amboseli with daylight left for a drive. For a 5-day trip, we usually recommend flying this leg. The time you save is the whole point of keeping the itinerary to five days.

Best Time of Year for This Combo

July through October is peak season. The Great Migration is typically in the Mara, dry weather keeps roads passable, and Amboseli’s elephants gather near permanent swamps, easy to spot against clear Kilimanjaro views.

January and February are also strong, drier months with fewer crowds and lower Mara park fees, since the reserve’s non-resident rate drops to USD 100/adult/day from January through June, versus USD 200/adult/day from July through December. Avoid late March through May if you can. Long rains turn Mara tracks to mud and can ground small aircraft.

Where to Stay: Budget to Luxury

Mobile camping means canvas tents, real beds, a shared mess tent for meals, and a camp crew who breaks everything down and sets it up again at the next site. It’s not roughing it, but it’s not a permanent lodge either. Here’s how the tiers compare.

What a 5 Day Mara Amboseli Itinerary Costs

For two people traveling mid-range, expect roughly USD 3,500-5,500 total for the five days, covering accommodation, meals, game drives, and one internal flight leg. Add USD 500-700 per person if you fly both legs instead of driving one.

Budget travelers sharing a mobile camping vehicle-based trip with road transfers can bring that down to around USD 2,200-3,000 per person for the full five days, park fees included.

What’s Included (and What Isn’t)

Most BestCamp itineraries include all meals, game drives in a 4×4 with a guide, park and conservancy fees, and airstrip or road transfers as booked. Excluded items are usually flights into Nairobi, visas, tips for camp staff and guides, alcoholic drinks, and travel insurance.

Pack light, soft-sided duffel bags rather than hard suitcases. Small aircraft have strict luggage limits, often 15 kg per person including hand luggage. Bring layers. Mara mornings can drop to 12°C, and afternoons can climb past 28°C.

Park and Conservancy Fees

Fees are a real line item, not a footnote. As of late 2025, Masai Mara National Reserve charges USD 100/adult/day from January through June, rising to USD 200/adult/day from July through December during peak migration season. It’s run by the Narok County Government, not the Kenya Wildlife Service. Amboseli National Park, a KWS park, charges a flat USD 90/adult/day non-resident year-round.

If you add a private conservancy like Naboisho or Mara North to your Mara nights, expect that fee bundled into the camp rate, typically USD 80-150 per person per night on top of the base cost.
