How Many National Parks Does Kenya Actually Have?

How Many National Parks Does Kenya Actually Have?

How many national parks does Kenya have? That’s what a guest asked me over a bush breakfast in Tsavo West, while we were folding camp chairs and the fire was still smoking. She had read three different blogs before her trip and gotten three different numbers. Twenty. Twenty-four. Twenty-seven. None of them agreed, and none of them told her why.

Here’s the answer, straight from the source. The Kenya Wildlife Service, or KWS, manages 23 national parks. That number sits alongside 28 national reserves and 4 national sanctuaries, all part of the same protected area system but run under different rules. Most of the confusion online comes from writers who blend parks and reserves into one number, then round it wherever it lands.

If you’re planning your first trip, this isn’t just trivia. Whether a place is a national park or a national reserve changes who collects your entrance fee, how the roads are managed, and sometimes how close you can get to a campfire at night. Let’s sort it out properly.

What Counts as a National Park in Kenya

A national park in Kenya is land set aside and managed directly by the Kenya Wildlife Service, a national government body. No livestock grazing is allowed inside. No community settlement happens inside the boundary. KWS rangers handle security, road maintenance, and fee collection.

A national reserve is different. Reserves are usually managed by county governments or local trusts, not KWS. The most famous example trips up almost everyone: the Maasai Mara is not a national park. It’s a national reserve, administered by the Narok County Government. That single fact explains a lot of the confusion in searches about Kenya’s parks, because the Mara is the park most first-time travelers picture when they say “Kenya safari,” and it isn’t technically a park at all.

There’s more on this split in our guide to the national park vs national reserve in Kenya, if you want the full picture before you book.

So, How Many National Parks Does Kenya Have?

Twenty-three. That’s the current KWS figure, covering everything from small city-edge parks to vast wilderness in the north.

Here’s why other sites disagree. Some count only terrestrial parks and forget the four marine national parks along the coast, like Malindi Marine National Park. Others lump national parks and national reserves together and call the total “national parks,” which pushes their number toward 40 or higher. A few older articles simply haven’t been updated since KWS last revised its protected area list. When a page says “around 20 to 27,” it usually means the author didn’t check which category they were counting.

Add it up properly and Kenya’s protected area system looks like this: 23 national parks, 28 national reserves, and 4 national sanctuaries, for 55 distinct protected areas overseen at national or county level. That’s before you count private conservancies, which are a separate category again, bordering many of the reserves.

National Parks vs Reserves vs Sanctuaries vs Conservancies

Each category has its own management, its own fee structure, and its own feel on the ground. This is the table I wish someone had shown that guest in Tsavo before her trip.

CategoryManaged byExampleNon-resident entry fee (2026)
National ParkKenya Wildlife ServiceAmboseli National ParkUSD 90/adult/day
National ParkKenya Wildlife ServiceTsavo East / Tsavo WestUSD 80/adult/day
National ReserveCounty governmentMaasai Mara National ReserveUSD 100/adult/day (Jan-Jun), USD 200/adult/day (Jul-Dec)
National SanctuaryKWS or joint managementNgulia Rhino Sanctuary (Tsavo West)Indicative, varies by site
Private ConservancyPrivate trust or landowners’ associationNaboisho Conservancy, Mara North ConservancyRoughly USD 80-150/person/night, bundled into lodge rates

Notice the Mara’s fee jumps for the July to December migration season. That’s a county pricing decision, not a KWS one, and it’s a good example of why the park versus reserve distinction actually changes your budget. We break this down further in our piece on private conservancy vs. national reserve pricing, which matters a lot if your itinerary mixes both.

A Look at Kenya’s Major National Parks

Not all 23 parks show up on a typical safari route. These are the ones that actually shape most itineraries, including the ones we run mobile camps through.

ParkApprox. sizeDrive time from NairobiKnown for
Nairobi National Park117 km²20-30 minutes from city centerLions and rhino within sight of the skyline
Amboseli National Park392 km²4 to 4.5 hoursElephant herds under Mount Kilimanjaro
Tsavo East National Park13,747 km²4.5 to 5 hoursRed-dust elephants, wide open plains
Tsavo West National Park9,065 km²4 to 4.5 hoursMzima Springs, volcanic hills
Lake Nakuru National Park188 km²2.5 to 3 hoursRhino sanctuary, flamingos
Chyulu Hills National Park741 km²4.5 hoursRolling green hills, star-bed camps
Aberdare National Park766 km²2.5 to 3 hoursMoorland, forest elephant, tree lodges

Tsavo East and Tsavo West together form one of the largest protected areas in the world, at roughly 22,800 square kilometers combined. On the other end of the scale, Saiwa Swamp National Park near Kitale covers about 3 square kilometers, small enough to walk across in an afternoon, and one of the only parks where you’re allowed to explore on foot without an armed ranger for most of the trail.

Best Parks for the Big Five, and What’s Near Nairobi

If seeing lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino in one trip matters to you, Amboseli, Lake Nakuru, and both Tsavo parks are your strongest options among the KWS-run parks. Add the Maasai Mara, even though it’s a reserve, and you’ve covered the classic Big Five circuit most first-timers ask for.

If you only have a weekend, Nairobi National Park is genuinely worth it. It sits about 10 kilometers from the city center, and I’ve watched a lioness walk past acacia trees with office towers behind her. Ol Donyo Sabuk and Hell’s Gate are also within a two-hour drive, both good half-day options if you’re stretching a layover.

What This Means for Your Route and Your Budget

Here’s the practical part. A multi-park itinerary usually mixes KWS parks and county-run reserves, and that mix changes your daily cost. A five-day trip through Amboseli at USD 90/day and the Mara at USD 100 to 200/day (depending on season) carries a very different price tag than one that stays inside KWS parks the whole way.

This is exactly why we map out fees park by park before we quote a trip, rather than giving one flat number. If you want to see how this plays out on the ground, our 5-day Kenya safari itinerary walks through a real route, with real distances and real costs per leg.

The BestCamp Safaris Difference

We’ve pitched mobile camps in enough of these 23 parks, plus the Mara and a handful of private conservancies, to know that the park-versus-reserve question isn’t academic. It decides where our trucks are allowed to drive off-track, whether we can do a night game drive, and how early we need to leave camp to make a border crossing between a park and a neighboring conservancy.

When we build your route, we tell you plainly which stops are KWS parks and which are reserves, what each one costs at today’s rates, and why we picked that order. No guessing, no rounding a fee up or down to make a package look tidier than it is. You’ll know before you land in Nairobi exactly which gate you’re walking through each morning, and what it costs to walk through it.
