Everything you carry onto the plane counts. The pilot or ground crew often puts soft bags in the small rear hold. They weigh the whole pile together sometimes, not each piece separately. Your camera body and telephoto lens count. So does your daypack, your water bottle, and the book you tucked under your arm. Couples usually cannot combine their allowance into one 30 kg bag on scheduled flights. Each person gets 15 kg. If you carry a large camera bag and a daypack, the total weight matters.
Soft-Sided Bags: Why They Matter
Hard-shell suitcases are a problem on small Cessna or Caravan aircraft. The cargo doors are small and oddly shaped. A hard case can jam in the hold or refuse to fit at all. Safari pilots and handlers prefer a soft duffel or a soft-sided backpack that can squish into the space. Keep the main bag around 60 cm long, 35 cm wide, and 30 cm deep. That is roughly 24 inches long, 14 inches wide, and 12 inches deep. Some operators accept a slightly larger bag if the plane is empty, but do not rely on that. If the bag is rigid, it may be left behind at Wilson Airport.
Route Differences and What You Pay on the Ground
The flight time and the luggage rule stay similar on most safari routes. What changes is the road alternative, the airstrip, and the park or conservancy fee.

In the Maasai Mara, scheduled flights land at airstrips such as Kichwa Tembo, Musiara, Ol Kiombo, or Naboisho. The road distance from Nairobi is about 270 km, which can take five to six hours. The 45 to 60 minute flight avoids that. In Amboseli, the airstrip sits close to the park boundary. You can see Kilimanjaro on a clear morning before the wheels touch down. In Samburu, the flight crosses the Laikipia Plateau and lands near the Ewaso Nyiro River.
Notice the Maasai Mara fee changed in October 2025. The reserve is run by Narok County, not KWS. Non-resident adults pay USD 100 per day in January through June and USD 200 in July through December. Amboseli National Park is USD 90 per adult per day. Tsavo East and West are USD 80. These fees are separate from your flight and your camp.

AirKenya and Safarilink Baggage Policies
AirKenya and Safarilink both lead with the same luggage message. Allow 15 kg per person including hand luggage. Soft bags only. They usually weigh bags at the check-in counter at Wilson Airport, not at the airstrip. Some routes to Amboseli or the Mara are full of passengers and camera gear, so staff enforce the limit. On a quiet morning flight, a small extra camera bag may be waved through. That is not a promise. Both airlines list their baggage rules online, but the final call belongs to the pilot on the day.
What Happens If Your Bag Weighs More
Excess luggage on a scheduled safari flight is not like a big airline. There may be no extra seat to buy and no cargo hold to open. If your bag is over 15 kg, one of three things happens. The crew may ask you to leave items with the office at Wilson Airport. They may place the bag on a later flight if space exists. Or they may refuse to board the bag and you repack on the spot. You do not want to do that at 6:00am in a parking lot. Some carriers charge per kilogram on certain routes, but the fee and availability change day to day. Confirm before you arrive.

Leave behind the large hard suitcase, hair dryer, heavy jeans, multiple pairs of shoes, full-size toiletries, heavy books, and laptop. Keep your camera bag around 5 kg and your daypack under 3 kg. Storing Excess Luggage in Nairobi

Wilson Airport also has a left-luggage office, but do not rely on it during busy mornings. Ask your hotel before checkout. A clean duffel waiting in reception beats a repack on the tarmac.
Coastal Flights and Private Charters: The Exceptions
Flights from Nairobi to Diani Beach or Mombasa on scheduled airlines may allow a standard 20 kg or 23 kg checked bag. Those are not safari routes, even if you are going to a coastal safari. Once you board a small Cessna or Caravan from the coast into Tsavo or the Mara, the 15 kg soft-bag rule returns. Private charter flights often allow more weight, sometimes 25 kg to 50 kg per person depending on the aircraft. But a private charter may also restrict bulk. A sports bag with hard sides can still be a problem. Booking a private plane gives you flexibility, not a free pass on size.
