Italian is not a common safari language in Kenya. Most guides speak excellent English, and many speak German or French. Italian speaking guides exist, but they are rare. The best ones are often booked months ahead by boutique agencies.
You do not need an Italian speaking guide to enjoy Kenya. A good English speaking guide with 10 years of experience will show you more than a new Italian speaking guide who just got certified. We believe the guide matters more than the language.
Still, we respect that planning in your own language is easier. Our office team can answer emails in Italian. We will send you a detailed itinerary in Italian before you book. Your daily game drives will be in English, but you will receive a daily briefing in writing, in Italian, on your pillow each evening.
If you truly want a private Italian speaking guide, we can request one. The surcharge is usually USD 150 to USD 250 per day on top of your private safari rate. We will check availability for your dates and confirm before you pay.
Best parks and conservancies for Italian travelers
Kenya offers very different landscapes. Here is how we split the main areas for honeymooners.
Masai Mara National Reserve is the classic. The wildebeest migration crosses the Mara River between July and October. Expect crowds in August, especially around Ferragosto. The reserve is run by Narok County, so entrance fees are USD 200 per adult per day from July to December. From January to June it drops to USD 100.
Naboisho Conservancy sits right next to the Mara but feels empty. It is a private conservancy, so vehicle numbers are limited. You will see the same wildlife without 20 cars around a lion. Your lodge fee includes the conservancy fee, roughly USD 80 to USD 150 per person per night. This is where we send honeymooners who want privacy.
Amboseli National Park gives you elephants against Mount Kilimanjaro. Park fees are USD 90 per adult per day. The park is dry and open, so wildlife viewing is easy. It is a two hour flight from the Mara, or a full day drive.
Samburu National Reserve is further north, with a different ecosystem. You will see reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, and Somali ostrich. The reserve is quieter than Amboseli. Entrance fees are around USD 70 per adult per day, an indicative figure that changes seasonally.
Laikipia Plateau is our favorite for a honeymoon. It is a huge private conservancy region, north of Mount Kenya. It has wild dogs, rhino, and very few tourists. Conservancy fees run USD 80 to USD 120 per person per night, bundled into your lodge rate.
Private vs group safari, what changes for cost
A group safari in Kenya costs around USD 250 to USD 350 per person per day. You share a pop-up roof van with up to six other travelers. You follow a fixed itinerary. Meals are set, and you stay at mid-range lodges.
A private safari for two costs USD 450 to USD 700 per person per day. You get a 4×4 Land Cruiser with only your party. You set the wake-up time. You can linger at a leopard sighting without feeling guilty. Your guide adapts each day based on what you want.
The private price includes your guide, the vehicle, park fees, accommodation, and all meals. It does not include international flights, drinks, or tips. It does not include the fly-camp upgrade.
For a honeymoon, we strongly recommend private. The quiet moments matter. Stopping for a bush coffee with no one else around is worth the extra cost. If you are on a tight budget, a small group safari with a maximum of four people is a good middle ground.

Best time to travel around Italian holiday calendars
Italian travelers love to escape winter. The best time for a safari is December through March, when the weather is dry and the migration herds are in the southern Mara. This period also misses the Ferragosto crowds of August.
If you want to see a river crossing, you must come between July and October. The migration is dramatic, but so are the prices. August is peak season, and the Mara fills with international visitors. If you can travel in late September or October, you still see crossings with fewer people.
Easter week is busy with European travelers. The parks are full, and flights cost more. We suggest avoiding the two weeks around Pasqua unless you have no choice.
Christmas and New Year are wonderful for a honeymoon. The weather is perfect. Ndutu and the southern Mara have calving season in January and February, with predators everywhere. Book at least eight months ahead for these dates.
Visa and eTA requirements for Italian citizens
Italian citizens need an eTA for Kenya, not a visa. You apply online through the official Kenya eTA portal. The cost is USD 34 per person plus a service fee. Processing takes three to five business days. We recommend applying at least two weeks before your flight.
You will need a passport valid for at least six months, a return flight ticket, and proof of accommodation. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is not required for entry unless you arrive from a country with yellow fever transmission. Italy is not on that list.
The Kenya eTA is valid for 90 days. It allows single entry. If you plan to travel to Tanzania and come back, you need a new eTA.
Flights from Italy to Kenya
There are no direct flights from Rome or Milan to Nairobi in 2026. You will connect through a hub in Europe or the Middle East.
From Rome to Nairobi: Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa is the most common. Total flight time is about 9 to 10 hours with a layover. KLM via Amsterdam and SWISS via Zurich also operate daily.
From Milan to Nairobi: Flydubai via Dubai is a good budget option. Qatar Airways via Doha offers premium service. Both take 9 to 11 hours total.
Typical round-trip fares from Italy to Nairobi range from EUR 550 to EUR 1,100 per person in economy. High season (August and December) runs toward the top. You can also fly directly to Mombasa on the coast, which makes sense if you add a beach stay after safari.
Safari and beach combination: Diani, Watamu, Malindi
Most honeymooners add three or four nights on the Kenyan coast. After a week on dusty game drives, the Indian Ocean feels like heaven.
Diani Beach is our top pick. It is about 40 minutes south of Mombasa by road. The beach is white sand, the water is warm, and there are great reef restaurants. A flight from the Masai Mara to Ukunda Airstrip takes about 90 minutes.
Watamu is north of Mombasa. It is quieter than Diani, with a marine national park for snorkeling. The coral gardens are excellent in February and March.
Malindi is the oldest resort town on the coast. It has an Italian community and several authentic Italian restaurants. You will find pasta, espresso, and gelato easily. This is a good choice if you want a taste of home.
A standard combination is 7 nights safari plus 4 nights beach. Budget around EUR 1,200 to EUR 2,000 per couple for the beach portion, excluding flights.
What an Italian guided or English guided safari really costs in 2026
Let us give you a realistic budget for a private safari for two, excluding international flights.
For 7 nights in the Masai Mara and Naboisho Conservancy, with a private 4×4 and English speaking expert guide, the cost is USD 5,500 to USD 8,000 per couple. This includes all park fees, accommodation, meals, and local flights from Nairobi.
If you add a private Italian speaking guide, add USD 150 to USD 250 per day. For 7 days, that is USD 1,050 to USD 1,750 extra.
