How to reach Kenya from India: real routes from Kerala
There is no direct flight from Kochi or Trivandrum to Nairobi. You will connect through a Gulf hub. The most common carriers are Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad, and Air India.
Here is what the routing actually looks like:
- Kochi (COK) to Nairobi (NBO) via Dubai (DXB): Emirates. Outbound layover is often 3 to 5 hours. Total travel time is 13 to 16 hours including the layover.
- Trivandrum (TRV) to Nairobi via Doha (DOH): Qatar Airways. Layover is usually 2 to 4 hours. Total travel time is around 14 hours.
- Kochi to Nairobi via Abu Dhabi (AUH): Etihad. Similar timings, roughly 14 hours total.
The flights land at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi. From there you drive to the parks.
The best time to book is after Vishu or after Onam. Airfares drop slightly in these windows. You will pay more if you book during the Kerala school holidays.
Visa and eTA process for Indian passport holders
Since January 2024, Kenya uses the eTA system. Indians do not need a traditional visa sticker. You apply online before you fly.
The eTA costs USD 34 per person. You need a valid passport with at least 6 months of validity. You need a return flight ticket and a hotel or safari booking confirmation. You also need a yellow fever vaccination certificate if you are coming from a yellow fever endemic country. India is not on the list, but carry the certificate if you have it.
Processing takes about 3 to 5 working days. Apply at least 2 weeks before departure. The application is straightforward, but the system often rejects if the passport photo is not clear.

Park fees: the exact numbers for 2026
Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and Narok County Government raised non-resident park and reserve fees effective October 2025. Use these figures, not the old ones you may read elsewhere. Note that Masai Mara National Reserve is run by Narok County Government, not KWS, so its fee is set separately from the KWS park fees below.
- Masai Mara National Reserve: USD 100 per adult per day from January to June. USD 200 per adult per day from July to December.
- Amboseli National Park: USD 90 per adult per day.
- Lake Nakuru National Park: USD 90 per adult per day.
- Tsavo East and Tsavo West: USD 80 per adult per day.

But if you only have 4 days, choose the Mara. It is the heart of Kenyan safari.
Best time to visit for Kerala travelers
The Kenya calendar does not match the Kerala monsoon. You have two good windows.
- Post-Onam window (September to October): The migration is in the Mara. You see river crossings. The rains are light in Kenya. This is the best time for South Indian families who want to travel after Onam.
- Post-Vishu window (April to May): This is the long rains in Kenya. The parks gore greener. You see baby animals. Prices are lower. But some camps close in April. Check availability first.
Avoid December to March if you want the cheap season. Those months coincide with the dry season in Kenya, but they are also the peak European winter season.
What about Kerala style food at safari camps?
Most camps understand Indian food. They serve rice, dal, and mixed vegetable curries. But they do not serve authentic Kerala fish moilee or puttu. This is the reality.
What you will find:
- Vegetarian meals: Always available. Camps prepare fresh vegetables, lentils, and rice. Some have a dedicated Indian section.
- Fish and meat: Usually grilled chicken, beef in some camps, or fish from Lake Victoria. The fish is not Kerala style. It is cooked in a Swahili curry or grilled.
- Breakfast: Eggs, toast, fruit, and chai. The chai is milky but not as strong as Kerala chai.
- Strict vegetarian or Jain requests: Tell your tour operator in advance. Most camps will make a special dal and vegetable menu for you.
