Yes, Chinese passport holders need a Kenya eTA. Kenya replaced its old visa-on-arrival system with an electronic Travel Authorization, or eTA, starting in January 2024, after the government announced the change in late 2023. This applies to travelers from China too.
Apply online at the official Kenyan eTA portal at least two weeks before your flight. Processing takes about three business days, sometimes longer. The fee is an indicative USD 30 to USD 35 per applicant, roughly RMB 210 to RMB 250. Exchange rates shift, so confirm the current fee on the official portal before you pay, and avoid third-party agents, which often charge double for no benefit.
You will need a passport valid for six months, a return ticket, proof of accommodation, and a yellow fever certificate if arriving from an infected country. Most Chinese travelers transit through a non-infected country, so this is rarely checked, but carry it if you have it.
Flight Routes from Chinese Hubs to Nairobi
There are no direct flights from mainland China to Nairobi. You connect through one hub, and total flight time runs about 14 to 18 hours plus a layover.
